Christmas Message

(Determined to Worship the King)”

Matthew 2:1~12)

This year’s Christmas is around the corner. When I was a child, I was excited about receiving Christmas gifts when Christmas came. At Christmas time, everyone including those who don’t believe in Jesus Christ as well as those who believe sends Christmas cards and exchange gifts. But whose birthday is Christmas? Obviously it’s Jesus’ birthday. Then, why do people rejoice over his birthday having parties and buying and exchanging gifts? Isn’t that strange?

That’s why Jesus is the Savior and Lord of the whole world. We have no other day but Christmas when we rejoice and do such things on someone else’s birthday. Originally the word ‘Christmas’ is made of two words: ‘Christ’ and ‘mass’. It tells us that Christmas originally means ‘Mass of Christ’, that is, ‘worship of Christ.’ Therefore, we need to be careful not to have parties and exchange cards and gifts without Jesus who is the main character and owner of Christmas. (But it doesn’t mean that I don’t take Christmas gifts, so refer to it.)

Those Who Were Determined to Worship the King

When we look at verses 1 and 2, Here we see that the Magi from the east traveled a long way to worship Christ when they saw his star. This is truly amazing. We don’t know what kind people they were because the Bible does not tell us so. But it is for sure that they were Gentiles, not Jews, because they came from the east. Scholars suspect that they might have come from Babylon or Persia.

Scholars say that they were astrologers, close to today’s astronomers. They were trying to discern signs of time by studying stars. They were respected in the Roman Empire especially between the 1st century BC through the 1st Century AD. They came to Jerusalem to worship the one who was born king of the Jews (v. 2). One day they found a very special star and they realized that it was a sign for the birth of the king of the Jews.

How they found it or why they decided to worship the king of the Jews is not known. But one thing is clear. They could not hold their desire to come to Jerusalem and worship the newborn king even though they were Gentiles. They realized that Jesus Christ was not only the king of the Jews but also the king for themselves as well as for all humanity.

Even though the Magi were determined to worship the king and came to Jerusalem, they did not know where the king would be born, so they went to King Herod’s palace because they thought a king would be born in the palace. It means, they did not know where they could see the king, but they just left home while not exactly knowing the destination. Why did they do that? Why did they recklessly came without proper knowledge? It was because they were so determined to worship the king.

Though they did not know exactly where the king was born, that fact could not prevent them from worshiping the newborn king. They just started their journey to worship the king. I really hope and pray that we have this same desire, same willingness, same determination to worship the Lord every week as we come to worship God here. After they arrived at Jerusalem and met Herod, they received correct information about the place of the king’s birth, that is, Bethlehem. Herod asked the chief priests and the teachers of the law and they knew exactly where the king would be born - Bethlehem (vs. 4-6).

Now these Magi set off to Bethlehem while those people who knew about it did not go. It was then when “the star they had seen in the eat” appeared again (vs. 9-10). When they saw the star again, they were so overjoyed. If we carefully read verses 2 and 9 again, we can find that the Magi had not seen the star again until this moment since they first had found it. That was why they were overjoyed when they saw the star again.

As a matter of fact, it would not have been easy for these Magi to travel all the way from the east to Judea. When they had first told others about going to worship the king of the Jews, people around them must have laughed at them and mocked them saying, ‘Why are you going there? Why do you want to worship the king of the Jews? Are you Jews? How do you know the star you saw was real? Where is the evidence? Don’t just waste your time.’

In spite of all those mocking and sneer, their hearts were determined and they came to worship the king. And now it was proven that their journey was not in vain. Then, with great joy they worshipped the newborn king and offered gifts of gold, incense and myrrh.

“On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” (v. 11)

What we need to remember and hold onto today is this is: we should be determined to worship the king no matter what situation we may be in, and then to act on it; not just be determined but act on it. God leads and guides those who are determined to worship him. It’s okay to have little knowledge of the Bible or no knowledge of Christian rituals. Those who are determined and willing to worship Him and start their journey, the Lord surely remembers and shows them the right path.

There Is No Miracles for Those Who Are Determined to Worship the Lord

I’ve read an amazing content in a book written by a well-known Korean scholar several years ago. Someone says it is not true, but it is truly amazing, so I’d like to share with you.

There is a word 'serendipity' in English, which means 'unexpected discovery' or 'unintentional and accidental discovery'. It means that things that do not have any connection to each other are connected together unintentionally with good results. For example, after I took out a jacket I had not worn for years, I found a $20 bill in the pocket. That is called serendipity.

In the late 19th century in Scotland, a poor farmer named Fleming lived in a rural village. One day while he was working in the field, he heard a scream from the swamp nearby so he rushed there. There he found a boy fell into the swamp and was drowning. So the farmer barely rescued the boy just before his death.

The next day, a nobleman with a fancy wagon came to visit. He said that they boy the farmer rescued was his son and he was so thankful for saving his son’s life. The nobleman said he would pay anything for it, but the farmer declined after declined. At that moment, the nobleman found the farmer’s son looking at the scene from the barn and proposed to the farmer that he would educate the farmer’s son at the same level as his own son he had saved.

As the nobleman proposed, the son of a poor Scottish farmer Fleming studied at St. Mary's College of Medicine at London University that was the best school at the time. Later this farmer’s son found Penicillin, received a title of nobility and received a Nobel Prize. His name is Dr. Alexander Fleming.

That was not even as amazing. The son of the nobleman that the farmer had saved later got pneumonia. If he had not had penicillin in his day, he would have died. The nobleman's name was Sir Randolph Churchill, and his son, who fell into the swamp, was Sir Winston Churchill, who saved Britain during World War II.

Think about this. What if the boy Winston Churchill had not fallen into the swamp that day? What if the farmer Fleming had not been able to save him from the swamp? What if the boy Alexander Fleming had not been educated with the nobleman’s help? And if he had not discovered penicillin later, what would have happened to those many soldiers in World War II including Winston Churchill who got pneumonia later? And what would have happened to Britain during World War II without Churchill?

There is another aspect to this entangled process of countless serendipities.

If Alexander Fleming had not been an army doctor in World War I and had not been able to experience the unfortunate experiences of countless soldiers dying of being infected by germs, and if he had not been determined to invent something to save them, and if he had not had a clear goal of research on infections, there would have been no coincidences and serendipities.

Fleming was not the only army doctor during World War I that treated injured soldiers. But Alexander Fleming was the only doctor who was resentful of his inability as a doctor as he was seeing dying soldiers and so determined to challenge life-threatening infectious diseases.

So many accidental things were connected together to create the miracle of penicillin and save so many lives. It was possible because of the enthusiasm and honesty of those who were involved in all of these processes and their willingness to protect human life. For those who do not see special things that God shows every day, serendipity does not happen even though there are so many special things in our daily lives. Only those who have eyes to discover those special things out of ordinary things can experience events of serendipity.

The Magi of today's text are the living witnesses of this serendipity. In fact, it's way more than serendipity. They knew that God was guiding them through the entire process, understood its meaning, and devoted themselves to the work of the Lord and acted on it.

They were not the only ones who saw the special star of the Jewish King. There were a lot of other magi who saw the star. But they were the only ones who came to seek out the star and worship the king. Therefore, they finally got the privilege of seeing and worshiping Jesus, the King of all humankind.

God led the situation. And the Magi from the east saw it and moved on. God worked through their act.

Faith is not something we plan and calculate everything and move on according to it. Though we cannot see the whole picture, faith is that we follow the Lord step by step while trusting him with the determined hearts to worship him. And in this process, we love and serve those people who God send to us. Even if he sends us difficult people, we just go forward while thanking him for training us through those people.

At that moment, God shows us evidences and encourages us and guides us. When we are determined to worship the Lord and take the path of faith, we can live a life in which we find Him and rejoice after rejoice in Him and worship Him. I hope and pray that we will abundantly experience this amazing spiritual serendipity in our lives every day.
