Easter Message

Witnesses of the Resurrection”

Luke 24:36~49)

Opening]

A massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris broke out last Monday and destroyed large parts of the 850-year-old church. It was such an unfortunate incident and devastating blow to all humanity. My family and I were right there in front of Notre Dame taking photos during my sabbatical in 2015, so I could not really believe what happened, especially when the spire fell. I later figured out that the CNN televised the burning scenes live from Paris.

The Notre Dame Cathedral fire is such a shocking incident. In fact, the resurrection of Jesus 2,000 years ago was also very shocking. His resurrection is a historical fact. It was not done in secret. The whole city of Jerusalem knew about it and eventually the whole Roman Empire knew about it as well. It is a fact. If they had something like CNN had been there, they would have broadcast it live.

How many people do you think believe in the resurrection? That a person died and rose again... Is it possible? But surprisingly enough, a lot of people in the world say, “I believe in the resurrection. I just don't understand it.” According to a survey done by George Gallup a few years ago, even 84% of the people who never go to church (they were not Christians), believe that Jesus rose from the dead. Of course it was not a true faith, but they at least agree.

There are at least 15 historical references to Jesus meeting people, touching people, talking with people. One time He cooked breakfast for his disciples right by Galilee. One time He talked to about 500 people after He had risen from the dead. A lot of people saw Him. What does that mean? Jesus is who he claimed to be! He is truly the Risen Lord!

Jesus appears to the disciples (36-43)

Right before today’s passage, we see that, on the very day Jesus was risen from the dead, two of Jesus’ followers saw him on the way to a town called Emmaus. While they were talking with each other about everything that had happened in Jerusalem (14), Jesus came and walked along with them (15) but they did not recognize him (16).

Then, beginning with the Law and the Prophets, that is the Old Testament, Jesus explained to them what was prophesied in all the Scriptures concerning himself (27). Although the two recognized him, Jesus suddenly disappeared from their sight (31).

So they (the two who were on the way to Emmaus) got up and immediately returned to Jerusalem and reported to the Eleven disciples and others what happened to them on the road (35). Amazingly, those in Jerusalem were also talking about the same thing that the Lord truly rose from the dead and appeared to Simon Peter (34).

While they were still talking about that, all of a sudden, Jesus appeared to them (36). It means that Jesus’ body was different than the body before his death. Being frightened, the disciples thought he was a ghost (37). Then, Jesus proved himself by showing his wounded hands and feet (39), and he even ate a piece of broiled fish (42-43).

The words of Jesus (44-49)

Jesus says 4 important things now.

First he says that all the prophecies written in the Old Testament have been fulfilled in him (44-45). Jesus reminds his disciples that he had already told them everything (44). Jesus did not teach new things but those things were already written in the Old Testament. Then he opens the disciples’ minds so they could understand the Scriptures (45).

God’s word has been with us for long time. No matter if everything in the world changes, his word will last forever. If you have been going to church for some years, it’s natural to gain some knowledge on the Bible. But we need to meditate on it over and over again even though we feel we know everything.

I often experience amazing things that the very passage I thought I knew very well comes alive and grabs me as a totally new thing. Why? It happens because the Lord opens up my mind so I can understand it.

Then, we need to find out the ways to practice the Bible lessons that we have heard, read and learned. What good is there if we only knew it in the brain?

The true benefit of God’s word comes after practicing it. The true knowledge according to the Bible is not the knowledge that stays in the brain but the ‘experiential knowledge’ that is practiced in our daily living.

Secondly, Jesus tells his disciples of what would have happened to him in vv. 46-47. That Christ would die on the cross and rise again from the dead on the third day (46), and that whoever repents sins and accepts Christ as the Savior would be forgiven (47). Amazingly all these things I just mentioned were already written long time ago in the Old Testament.

This is the gospel. The gospel is the message that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins and on the third day rose again from the dead; and that you will be forgiven if you accept this Jesus as your Savior and repent of your sin in his name. This is the gospel of Christ. The gospel is never complicated. It’s very simple.

And starting from Jerusalem, the gospel will be preached to all nations. The gospel would be preached not just to the Jews but to all ethnic groups. This intent of God was already revealed in the calling of Abraham long time ago around BC 2000 (Genesis 12) that all nations would be blessed through Abraham. It was very clear in Psalms and Isaiah and others as well.

No matter which ethnic background or race one has, God loves all people and wants every single person in the world to be saved. That is correct. God does not want anyone to be destroyed in hell. That’s why God wants the gospel to be preached to all nations. Through who? Through us. With deep understanding of the heart of God, Christ’s disciples went on to other nations and people groups and preached the gospel to them. As a result, even we, Gentiles (non-Jews), heard the gospel, accepted Jesus and received eternal life.

Therefore, as the people who experienced God’s grace first, we are responsible for reaching out to those who do not know the gospel of Jesus Christ yet. There are many people like that around us here and there are still many people groups in the world who have never once heard of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Therefore, we need to carry out our mission of preaching the gospel and pray for missionaries.

Now what does Jesus call his disciples?

“You are witnesses of these things” (48).

What is a witness? A witness is a person who testifies what he/she has seen and heard.

If one adds his/her own opinions to facts, that’s not a witness. If a witness presents things in his/her own imagination, that’s not a witness; that’s a novelist. A witness testifies only the facts that he/she has experienced. Jesus calls his disciples “witnesses of (all) these things” because they saw his death and resurrection as well as his public life.

Therefore, when we try to share the gospel with someone, we just have to present what has really happened to us rather than what we think the gospel is. We simply need to tell them, “I became a different person now. I am so happy and thankful because of God’s grace through Jesus Christ.”

Finally, Jesus promises the disciples of one thing.

“I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high” (49).

Jesus would not just leave his disciples to preach the gospel on their own but promises to clothe them with the power from above. So when we boldly preach Christ’s gospel as his witnesses, God will not leave us alone but fill us with the mighty power of the Holy Spirit.

We are going to fail if we try to do with our own power, but amazing things will happen when we go on with the power of the Lord. Yes, that is true. Don’t say no if you haven’t experienced it. If you have experienced it, you know what I’m saying.

Closing]

Today Jesus the Risen Lord speaks to us as well; not just to the disciples but also to us as well. “You are witnesses of all these things that truly happened.” This is not imposing big burden on our shoulders or forcing us to do something bad or fearful. A lot of young people feel like ‘Oh, Christian living is burdensome. God gives me so much burden... do this and do that, and don’t do this and don’t do that.’ But that’s not it. Rather, Jesus wants to give us an opportunity.

Think about your daily life. Think about your average day and its schedule. How many of the things you do on an average day would last forever after you die? It’s almost none for most people. It’s full of daily routine that would end with our own death. That’s it. There’s nothing that would last forever after we die.

But God wants us to take his task that has eternal value so that we can accumulate rewards in the eternal kingdom of God. That’s why he says, “You are my witnesses of all these things.” He really, really wants to call each and every one of us “You are a good and faithful servant.” So he’s giving us a chance to be called by that title.

My prayer on this Easter Sunday is that all of us understand that heart of God who wants to give us the opportunity to be servants of his eternal kingdom. I also pray that each of us makes a firm decision today to be a faithful witness of Christ’s gospel who would fulfill the desire of our Lord in every moment of our lives.
